One life lesson I plan to impart on my son is that if you ever find yourself in a situation where you are fortunate enough to help someone you do it. You don’t ask questions. You don’t think twice. You just help. Leave your mark in someone else’s life and try to be selfless in your own pursuit of happiness.
That being the case, Tribute Strength is honored to be in a position to do just that. To help.
We’re excited to announce that we will be partnering up with Lululemon Montclair and holding our 1st ever charity fundraising partner-workout, “Tough Love”, on Saturday, February 13 at 8am.
We will be raising money to help support wounded Marine, and now United States Paralympic Gold medal contender, Sgt. Michael Wishnia. Michael’s story is one of heroism, valor, trauma and redemption It’s a story that deserves to be told and it’s a story that deserves our attention.
Having grown up in Livingston, NJ, Michael is someone I’ve known for many years and have had the good fortune of being close friends with the family. He, like many other soon to be heroes, joined the Marine Corps shortly after 9/11 and went on to serve 3 tours in Iraq in 2004, ’05 and ’06. After returning to become a drill instructor for 3 years he chose to go back into the war zone in Afghanistan where an explosion shattered his leg.
As a result, Michael will never be able to walk without pain or a limp again. Constant assistance in many forms is needed. Unfortunately this is the story for so many veterans. But there is more.
Shortly after returning from Afghanistan, Michael sat in his chair with a gun prepared to end the emotional and physical pain he was suffering from. It was at that life altering moment when his service dog, provided by 4Paws4Patriots, came from the other room and jumped into his lap and knocked the gun out of his hand. His dog saved his life.
While the dog laid there on his lap, Michael took his first steps towards repurposing his life. As one of his friends perfectly put it, “He hung up one American uniform for another, joining Team USA Paralympics to fight for his country in another way.”
Michael went on to become the 2 time national champion for the F57 shotput and currently ranks 2nd in the world. F57 is the international classification that allows him to compete for the Paralympics, from a seat, due to injuries sustained while deployed. He is now training for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro and has a legitimate shot to stand atop the podium representing the United States.
In what can only be described as a completely asinine Team USA policy, they pay for very little to none of their athletes expenses, training, equipment, travel, event fees, chair adjustments, and more. We are all in a position to assist and this is one manner in doing so. 100% of registration fees will be going towards Michael’s path to the podium as well as 4Paws 4Patriots.
Michael served us and paid a steep price – pretty sure this fundraiser is the least we can do.
